The childhood I want for them

I want…

Hand holding and kisses on the lips

Cuddles on the couch until bedtime

Disney movies and big ol’ bowls of popcorn

Dance parties in the kitchen

One big family hug sandwiched together

I want…

Banana bread chocolate chip muffins cooling on the counter

Roasting s’mores in the backyard

Bare feet blackened from dirt and grass stains that tell a story

I want…

Family game night just for the fun of the game

Early bedtimes, kids crashed out from too much blue skies and mountain air

Trick or Treating till they are way past the acceptable age; but there’s candy to hunt and friends to get in trouble with

Teeth under pillows and cookies left near the glow of the tree

First walks, first words, first loves, first heartbreaks

Diary entries tucked under beds and notes passed in class

I want….

Piñatas at birthday parties

Mega forts in the living room

Sleepovers with siblings and friends that feel like family

Homemade pizza nights

Pumpkin patches and hay rides

Sitting in a cold arena, cheering too loudly

Flower bouqets after a dance recital or performance

This is the childhood I want for them.

And as much as this is their childhood; I’m living it too.

With every first and last, their childhood becomes my motherhood.
